Partners in Environmental Projects

Where possible, TenCate Geosynthetics enters into cooperation with specialist companies in the chain. A good example of this is the strategic cooperation with WaterSolve LLC in Caledonia (Michigan, US) in environmental and hydraulic projects. This market group employs TenCate Geotube® technology for dewatering and coastal protection, while WaterSolve’s contribution consists of chemical expertise, equipment, chemical installations and operational support.

WaterSolve LLC offers customized methods and services for environmental remediation. Its staff, which consists of engineers and technicians, provides support to the customer from the start of a project to its completion. It is this full-service concept that has earned the company its reputation as the US leader in dewatering projects. In 2005 TenCate Geosynthetics entered into a distribution agreement with the company for the TenCate Geotube® portfolio, with the field of operations being municipalities and light industry in the North Central section of the United States. ‘WaterSolve is an expert in the use of the chemical treatment of sediments for dewatering’, says Mark Gunzenhauser (VP of sales, Water & Environment business unit). ‘This is a key precondition for the successful operation of a TenCate Geotube® container.’

‘Our cooperation is built on the synergy between our products and services in dewatering technology – our core business – and the range of TenCate’s products’, says Gregg Lebster (President, WaterSolve). ‘This enables us to offer a ready-made solution for the dewatering of sludge. Without this strategic cooperation our customers would have to approach separate companies for all the different ingredients for a dewatering project, such as the chemical supplier, the container producer and the contractor, as well as design work. Together with TenCate we can carry out all of these functions vertically integrated.’

A large number of projects have now been completed using TenCate Geotube® technology. Examples include the cleaning of a water basin at a glue factory in Illinois and a remediation project at a Navy facility (Seaplane Lagoon) in California. TenCate Geotube® made the difference there. ‘This has led to a reduction in the costs of dewatering’, says Gregg Lebster. ‘Manufacturers are happy to discover a simple TenCate Geotube® system can save the cost of upgrading their water treatment plant, or lower the surcharges being paid for dumping residuals into the municipal wastewater systems. In addition to other benefits of use, other methods of dewatering require far more energy, labour and maintenance. The product is so easy to use that it also makes a difference for contractors and customers.’

Mark Gunzenhauser (VP of sales, Water & Environment) is equally positive about the cooperation. ‘WaterSolve can offer each component separately or in combinations: polymers and flocculants to improve the consolidation of sludge particles and the release of water, the equipment that is required to inject the chemical substances into the sludge, the technical design for the dewatering cell and the full implementation and management of our TenCate Geotube® containers in dewatering projects. This fully integrated approach gives TenCate and WaterSolve greater control over the value chain from material to end customer.’

Training: How to Remove Lagoon Sludge and Improve WWTP Outcomes

WaterSolve, together with our sales agent Jim Bridges from Clearwater Dewatering and SRS Crisfulli, will complete a demonstration project at the City of Harlem Wastewater Treatment Facility.  This project will involve dredging the residuals from three partially mixed aerated lagoons and dewatering the residuals in Geotube Containers.  The project was initially scheduled to commence on June 3, 2013 but the unusually wet conditions in northern Montana forced the postponement of the project.

WaterSolve was invited to participate in a training session presented by Montana Rural Water Systems.  This training session was initially planned to coordinate with the demonstration project and was held as scheduled on June 6, 2013.  The seminar was entitled "2013 Sludge Removal For Small System Operators Workshop."  Participating in the presentation were:

Dan Kramer- Montana Rural Water Systems, Inc.
Randy Wilcox- WaterSolve
Alan Juncker- TenCate Geotube
Laura Fleming- SRS Crisafulli
Ryan Rittal- Stahly Engineering & Associates

Rather than visit the active dredging and dewatering operation after the classroom portion of the seminar as planned, the attendees watched as Geotube Dewatering Tests (GDTs) were performed with samples collected from the lagoons.

The conditions will dictate when the project is completed.  It is anticipated that the work will be complete in July or early August, 2013.

Please email Randy Wilcox randyw@gowatersolve.com for more information.
